Lyle Trachtenberg Career

After Lyle Trachtenberg completed his education at the University of California he started his career. After a while, Lyle joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees which serves as a labour union for more than a hundred thousand craftspersons, technicians including artisans active in the various aspects of the entertainment industry, including films, theatre, TV projects and trade shows.

Fortunately, he became a mighty and influential organiser for the union as well as gained some notoriety for his work on various sets as a union representative. According to a Variety article he published in  July 1995, it was heard that he caused some problems for Indie filmmaker Allison Anders. This happened during the filming of her 1996 movie Grace of My Heart.

In the second week after the filming began, Lyle went during lunch. He stationed himself outside by the catering truck, as he was abruptly denied entry to the set and began listing the benefits of becoming a member of the IATSE. When the lunch came to a halt, IATSE welcomed 25 new members. The situation became quite intense and there were talks of a makeshift strike. However, the producers reached an agreement with the union and they decided to kick-start filming again.

Really.

In Los Angeles, in January 1996, Times column producer Lawrence Bender wrote about his personal experience and he also wrote about dealing with Lyle Trachtenberg and the union. During the filming of White Man’s Burden, one of the films he produced, the union stopped the processing of the film which resulted in a significant amount of damage even monetarily.

In subsequent times, Bender listed some solutions to the problems of making low-budget pictures in conjunction with the unions in an interview with the LA Times. Trachtenberg responded sarcastically and advised him to waive his fees for the movies under a $3 million budget in which union stipulation would be disregarded. According to Bender, he saw it as an attempt to circumvent the issues and not provide a permanent productive solution.

Lyle Trachtenberg never found much success as an actor despite his initial aspirations. He appeared as himself in Robert-Rodriguez’s action-horror in 1996,  From Dusk Till Dawn. Also, in 1998, he portrayed a character known as the Husky Guy in writer John Quinn’s comedy film, Beach Movie. He also received special accolades for his involvement in films like Girl Fever (2002), Keeping Up With the Steins (2006), and Hello, My Name is Doris (2015).

Steadfastly, Lyle Trachtenberg continued to be an active member of the IATSE and took part in various demonstrations.
