His adoptive parents gave him the name, Sunjata (which means ‘hungry Lion’), after the African King, Sundiata Keita, who created the Mali Empire.
They raised him in Evanston, Illinois, where he attended Mount Carmel High School, Illinois, Chicago. While at high school, he played football and participated in two state championships.
